Best Team at IBJJF NY Fall Open 2018

Crazy 88 Mixed Martial Arts had another successful tournament showing in New York City on November 17-18, 2018. Along with Team Lloyd Irvin and Crazy 88 Elkridge and Owings Mills, Crazy 88 won the first place team trophy beating larger NY-based schools who had twice as many competitors. Crazy 88 sent 24 students, the second place team had 67 competitors.

Day 1 – Male Purple and Female Blue Belts in Gi

Byung Ju Lee won his first match 4-0. His second opponent was a No Show. Following, he choked his third opponent out from the back to enter to Semi-Finals. Ju Lee took home the Silver medal in the Purple Belt Light division losing a close match 2-2 and 2-1 on advantages.

Olivia Obodoagha won her first match with a kimura submission. Her second opponent was disqualified for a uniform malfunction. She brought home the Gold medal in the Super Heavy Blue Belt division. Obodoagha entered the Blue Belt Open division where she won her first match with a submission, avenging two previous losses she had to the opponent earlier in the year. Obodoagha closed out the division with her teammate, taking home Double Gold for the day in New York.

Leah Mays beat her first opponent with a takedown, pass, and submission, also to a girl she lost to earlier in the year. Mays beat her next opponent 5-0 to win Gold in the Medium Heavy Blue Belt division. Mays entered the Blue Belt Open division, where she won her first match 6-0 and closed out the division with Obodoagha.

Brian Anderson won his first match with an arm bar submission. His second opponent was a No Show; Anderson ended up with the Gold medal in the Juvenile Blue Belt Light division.

Michelle Ho and Micheal Silverman also competed on the first day.

Day 2 – White Belts

It was a great second day for the Crazy 88 White Belts – four competitors came home with Gold medals and one Silver by close out.

  • Mark Banks submitted two opponents for Gold
  • Mendel Bulua also submitted all his opponents
  • James Smith and Anton Alexander closed out their division
  • Lindsey Barry won Finals by a lot of point

Mark Banks won his first match with a choke from the back. He also submitted his second opponent with an ezikiel to win Gold in the White Belt Master 1 Feather division.

Next, Mendel Bulua won his first match with a choke from the back. He submitted his second opponent with a triangle to take Gold in the adult White Belt Feather division.

James Smith won his first match 6-2. He closed out the Master 1 White Belt Light division with teammate Anton Alexander. Alexander’s first opponent was a No Show. He submitted his second opponent with a triangle arm bar.

Lindsey Barry won her first match with a referee’s decision, winning an important match against a rival team. Following, she won her Finals match 10-0 and took home the Gold medal in the White Belt Middle division.

Khalil Hider won his first match 5-0 to enter the Semi-Finals. He lost his second match and brought home the Bronze medal in the White Belt Light Feather division.

John Dixon was up next and won his first match 6-2 and his second match 6-0. Dixon won his Semi-Finals match 6-3 in a slobberknocker match. He lost on points in the Finals and brought home the Silver medal in the White Belt Light Division.

Antonio Lonesome won his first match 2-0. He lost his second on points.
