What Is Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that teaches children how to control, escape, and defend themselves using leverage and technique instead of strength.
Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ focuses on:
- Control positions
- Escapes from difficult situations
- Safe grappling and partner training
- Real-world self-defense awareness
It is widely considered one of the most effective and safest martial arts for children.
Why Jiu-Jitsu Is One of the Best Activities for Children in Maryland
Parents across Howard County, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County are choosing jiu-jitsu for their kids, and the reasons go well beyond fitness.
Here’s what families consistently tell us they’ve noticed after enrolling:
- Improved focus and attention: The structured nature of jiu-jitsu training transfers directly to classroom performance and homework habits.
- Greater confidence: Each new skill mastered gives kids a tangible sense of achievement they carry with them everywhere.
- Emotional regulation: Kids learn to manage frustration, stay calm under pressure, and communicate respectfully.
- Social connection: Classes at our Maryland locations bring kids together in a team-oriented environment where friendships form naturally.
- Real-world self-awareness: Jiu-jitsu teaches kids how to handle difficult situations using calm thinking and technique rather than aggression.
- Consistent physical activity: Classes keep kids active in a fun, structured way that never feels like a chore.
Our Kids BJJ Programs in Maryland
Crazy 88 offers two distinct jiu-jitsu paths for kids: Gi Jiu-Jitsu and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. Both are taught by experienced, patient martial arts instructors and follow an age-appropriate curriculum designed to build skills progressively. Many of our students train in both, and we’ll help you figure out which is the best starting point for your child.
Kids Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals
The traditional gi, the uniform used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is more than just a piece of clothing. In Gi Jiu-Jitsu, it becomes part of the technique. Kids learn to grip, control, and maneuver using the jacket and pants, which develops technical precision and a deep understanding of leverage and body mechanics.
Our kids’ Gi Jiu-Jitsu classes at Crazy 88 Maryland locations are built around progressive skill development. Students start with the fundamentals, proper positioning, basic escapes, and foundational sweeps, and gradually work toward more advanced concepts as they earn new belt stripes and promotions.
The belt progression system in Gi Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most powerful motivational tools in youth sports. Kids can visually track their progress, and belt tests become celebrated milestones for the whole family. Parents at our Elkridge, Owings Mills, and Severna Park locations consistently tell us how excited their children get about each new achievement on the mat.
What Kids Learn in Gi Jiu-Jitsu at Crazy 88:
- Foundational grappling positions (guard, mount, side control)
- Basic takedowns and trips adapted for age and size
- Escapes and defensive movements to build confidence in difficult situations
- Sweeps and reversals that teach leverage over strength
- Submission fundamentals and safe, age-appropriate techniques
- Respect, discipline, and mat etiquette
Kids No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced without the traditional uniform; students wear rash guards and shorts instead. Without fabric grips to rely on, kids develop a different dimension of their game: faster reactions, dynamic body control, and a greater focus on clinch work and underhooks.
For many kids, No-Gi feels more like wrestling, and that familiarity makes it a natural entry point for children who are newer to martial arts or who have a background in other contact sports. It’s an energetic, highly engaging class style that keeps kids moving and having fun while building real grappling skills.
Our No-Gi kids classes across Central Maryland, including Howard County, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County, are structured with the same care and safety focus as our Gi program. Instructors closely manage drilling and live rolling to make sure every child is challenged appropriately and feels successful.
What Kids Learn in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu at Crazy 88:
- Clinch control and body positioning without fabric grips
- Takedowns and wrestling-based entries
- Guard work and guard passing adapted for No-Gi dynamics
- Back takes and back control are one of the most important positions in grappling
- Leg positioning and lower body defense
- Situational awareness and decision-making on the mat

- Partner drilling: Kids practice with a partner under instructor supervision, this is where the real learning happens.
