Bruce Sabath MD explains the difference in the journey to Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt vs. Medical School

Medical doctor and Crazy 88 mainstay Bruce Sabath was promoted to the rank of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt. Bruce has been training regularly despite the birth of his first child, expanding his medical repertoire by working in DC, and multiple trips out of the country for charity medical work. Congrats to Bruce. His thoughts are below…

So, as promised, a few thoughts that came to mind after my promotion to blue belt:

-FACT: I got promoted with an A1 size belt. I guess I will be moving down to lightweight.

-FACT: I almost missed my own belt promotion cuz I had to run off the mats after class to answer the 5th straight call from my wife who was stuck in rush hour traffic on some unknown highway somewhere in Northern VA with my two-year old who was screaming that he had to go poo… with nowhere to pull over.

-EDUCATED GUESS: People in the class didn’t seem too impressed that someone was getting promoted (75% blank stares). I just tell myself that most in the 5pm class may not know the difference between blue, green, yellow, or purple belt.

-FACT: A belt is only as good as the academy where it’s earned and the instructor who gives it to you.

-FACT: If you had told me, when I first signed up, that one day I would be a blue belt at Crazy 88 Mixed Martial Arts, I woulda thought you were crazy. The blue belts just seemed to be in another universe in terms of their level of jiu-jitsu. To now be considered qualified to be included even at the entry level of this group is just an INCREDIBLY humbling experience.

-FACT: A part of this belt belongs to each and every person I’ve trained with. I would not have gotten here, period, without you pushing me, kicking my butt, etc. Congrats to YOU, not me.

-GOAL: I may never be a world champion myself, but I’ll work hard to give our competitors as hard a time in the training room as I can to help them be the best they can.

Thank you again to all my teammates!!! Who would’ve thought that one of the best jiu-jitsu schools in the WORLD (literally) would be in little ol’ Elkridge… Osss!!!
