On January 10th, 2015, first time competitors Sheri “Aleana” Leonard, Aleana “Shirley” Cofield, and Khalil Smith walked into Du Burns arena with experienced competitors Chris Kim and Vannessa Griffin to compete at the Good Fight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament.
The Good Fight organization recently switched to a Submission-Only format, but Crazy 88 went anyways. It would be a good warm-up for the Atlanta Open that would be held later that month. The Good fight declared that if white belts do not submit their opponent in 8 minutes and blue belts in 15 minutes, then the match would enter sudden death. The sudden death period would alternate with each competitor starting on the back of the other.
First up were Aleana and Sheri, the white belt girls of the group. Cofield fought a very good first match, but unfortunately, she lost in the 3rd Sudden Death period. She demonstrated good cardio and guard passing ability. Sheri Leonard also fought a very good match but ended up losing as well. Since they both, they would not have a 3/4 match since it would be vs. one another.
Khalil Smith, from the Crazy 88 Owings Mills location, was the only competitor to do both Gi and No Gi. He used his wrestling ability to the maximum and won some matches and lost some matches in both divisions. All his matches went into Sudden Death.
Next up were blue belts Vannessa Griffin and Chris Kim who went undefeated for the day. Griffin pulled off three bow and arrow chokes in two minutes, four minutes, and nine minutes to get first place for the day. Kim also pulled off bow and arrow chokes in all three of his matches to get first place as well.
In the end, the entire team was able to get good footage to study from and mistakes to fix for the IBJJF Atlanta Open in a few weeks.
