Tonight, we did a lot of positional sparring, which made for a much more mellow class than usual. People tend to get a bit carried away when we’re doing freestyle sparring, myself included sometimes. This is not too much of a problem when you’re not too tired from a long day of work. However, sometimes it’s nice to do light sparring without worrying about someone trying to rip you apart limb from limb. The other thing I like about positional sparring is it allows for more opportunities to experiment with techniques that are not necessarily in your comfort zone. Tonight, I was able to try a mount escape that requires giving up your back. Normally, this would be a dumb thing to try. However, giving up your back on purpose, in order to practice back defense, can be a good thing, especially if you have the right type of partner.
