The good news is that I finally got to spar against someone smaller than me. The bad news is that he was a blue belt. He was using all kinds of moves not covered in the first seven lessons! I was able to fend him off for the most part, until the very end of round two, when he got my back. I haven’t learned any back escapes yet. Partially out of respect for his abilities, I mainly played defense, rather than looking for submissions. Perhaps I’ll become more bold with my submission attempts after I feel more comfortable with positions and sweeps.
