What I Wish I Knew as a White Belt by Don Achnick

Don Achnick is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and the head instructor of the Kids Program at Lloyd Irvin Martial Arts in Camp Springs.  If you have not seen those kids in action, you are missing out – they grapple like experienced adults but have the flexibility and bounciness of the kids!

Our Childrens Martial Arts program is fashioned after Donnie’s because the Gold medal numbers it is putting up looks like the National Debt!

The importance of consistent training and drilling. As a white belt I loved learning new moves but hated drilling them. It was a burden to me. I didn’t understand and underestimated the importance of mental and physical drilling and the effect it has not only on making the subconciously reactive to the flows of grappling but also on muscle memory itself. If I could do it all over again I wouldn’t skip warm-ups or drilling sessions….EVER!
