Tonight’s sparring provided a much needed boost to my confidence. First, unlike the previous class, nobody submitted me. Second, I got to spar with another white belt, for a change. All of the sudden, I felt like I knew jiu jitsu again. I passed his guard with ease, mounted him, and submitted him with a pretty decent arm bar. By way of contrast, if I can do nothing else but pull off a single sweep in a match against a blue belt, I feel like the match was a success. That’s how good the blue belts are compared to the average white belt! I did get my guard passed more than I wanted by the blue belts tonight, but when I saw that the blue belts themselves were passing each other’s guards, I was reminded that getting your guard passed is a fact of life when sparring with such skilled opponents.
