Tonight was the first regular jiu jitsu class after two weeks of Judo. It was also my one year BJJ anniversary. That’s right! I’ve been doing jiu jitsu for a full year. I really feel like I have learned a lot in that time. More importantly, I am eating better and feeling much more energetic than I have in years. I plan on continuing to do jiu jitsu as long as my body holds out. Helio Gracie practiced jiu jitsu well into his 90’s, so I know it’s possible. During sparring tonight, I felt like I was able use a consistent strategy, rather than always trying to respond to what the other guy is doing. I even passed the guard, and submitted, a smaller purple belt several times. When he expressed surprise at how smoothly I passed his guard, I reminded him that he was the one who had taught me that particular guard pass, which is true! I also was able to have success with the William’s guard/omoplata setup that I have been working on. I really feel like it will end up becoming a staple ingredient of my bottom game. My goal over the next few months is to continue to refine my top and bottom game to the point where I can be more relaxed and flowing during sparring.
