Tonight, we worked on some sweeps from reverse De La Riva, a guard that I’m only just starting to appreciate. I even tried using it during sparring, with mixed results. Sparring went reasonably well. I continue to struggle against the bigger guys, but pound for pound, I think I’m holding my own. I even tried doing a twister submission on a similar sized blue belt. I didn’t do it too hard, because I wasn’t sure if the technique is kosher. It turns out the move is illegal, so I’m glad I didn’t crank it on. The twister is a spinal lock that could easily mess up a person’s back, if applied full force.
