Tonight was grueling, especially after taking the kids to the pumpkin farm today. However, I learned some valuable tips for successfully passing someone’s half guard. We had a good size class for a Friday, and everyone seemed in a feisty mood during sparring. Despite that, I felt like I held my own for the most part. I even passed the guard of the female blue belt that made me look silly the night before. I actually couldn’t believe I pulled it off. It’s only the second time I have ever passed her guard. Apparently, the coach felt we were all too spirited. After drilling and sparring for an hour and a half, he made us do sprints up and down the mats! Now, one thing I learned from being in the military is that you don’t have to be the fastest guy in the group. You just can’t be the slowest. What’s the expression? You don’t have to outrun the bear. You just have to outrun the other guy the bear is chasing. Those of us that ran a little faster were allowed to rest while the coach made the slower ones do sprints for another few minutes. What an end to a long week!
