Tonight was Q&A night. This is when the coach opens the floor to questions, and provides advice on dealing with different scenarios raised by students. I took the opportunity to ask about what to do when trapped in a position that is half way between half guard and mount. It is a dangerous position to be in, since you’re one step away from being mounted or submitted. Sparring was a breath of fresh air as well, since I didn’t have to go against so many big people tonight. That gave me an opportunity to relax a bit and try more things without fear of getting smashed. When going against larger sparring partners, I often find myself playing a more conservative game, so as not to place any of my limbs in unnecessary danger. It’s a good way to practice defense, but not so good for practicing offense.
