This is a very exciting time for everyone at Crazy 88 Mixed Martial Arts. We are proud to announce the grand opening of our second location! For eight years, we have had a single location that has grown so large that we decided it’s now time to open another. For a long time our students, and those who would like to become students, have been asking for a location in Baltimore County.
Baltimore is well known for many different things. Crabs, bars, football, Edgar Allen Poe’s grave, but one thing Baltimore has never been known for is Mixed Martial Arts. There may be some secret street fighter champions, but no real Mixed Martial Artists.
The new location will have a schedule consisting of evening classes Monday through Thursday every week. The classes, instructed by Coach Jon Delbrugge, will consist of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No-Gi Grappling, and kids classes.
The facility will be 3,000 square feet with mats and bathrooms. For those of you who remember the fabled “old side”(the building where Crazy88 used to be located), this is about the size of one bay from that building. It will be located on Easter Court in Owings Mills, which is about 10-15 minutes from the mall and the metro station.
As many of you know, this is modest in comparison to the juggernaut that is Crazy88’s current Elkridge location. However, Crazy 88 started in 2005 in a small room in a fitness gym called The Body Factory. Master Julius Park started with only a few students in a room where they had to bring mats at the beginning of class, and take them away at the end of the night. He grew the program until he was able to afford to move it into a building by itself with mats. This is when he moved into a 3,000 square ft facility on Troy Hill Drive, a.k.a. “The old side”. From there he quickly expanded to 6,000 square ft, then 9,000 square ft, until he was able to move the academy into the 15,000 square ft facility that currently holds it.
Long time instructor Jon Delbrugge has been training and teaching for years. Coach Jon has strong backgrounds in striking, grappling, and also MMA. He has trained kickboxing in Thailand, placed at the Pan American Championships, Brazilian Nationals, and European Open of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and is also a professional MMA fighter with a record of 3-1.
Opening a Mixed Martial Arts gym has been a goal for Coach Jon since day one of training. He will place himself as one of the few martial artists not just running a gym, but also competing at a professional. This is a difficult task considering that instructing and competing require a lot of time and energy by themselves. It’s not easy to spend half the day getting beaten on, and then spend the other half teaching people how to beat on each other!
In its time, the team has produced countless grand slam medalists in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, competitors in kickboxing, and professional level MMA fighters. Not only that, but it has been home to many people who simply are passionate about martial arts, and want to train in the best environment they can find.
Seasoned trainees and competitors are encouraged to visit whenever possible to the new location. These guys are going to be starting completely fresh, so it will be good for them to see what different body types are like, different styles, and different teaching methods. Everyone is very excited to see the first few serious competitors come out of this new location, as well as who will be the lifetime trainees. Which of you Baltimore County residents is going to be our next world champion?
