Tonight, I went against one of the weaker blue belts as well as one of the stronger (but less technical) white belts. I felt like I held my own against the blue belt, even though he swept me a couple of times. The white belt tried to use muscle to thwart my attack, but only managed to bring me into his closed guard. I think he is improving, but I think I would have eventually passed his guard. After class, as I was picking up my new phase belt from the coach, he told me that I was now eligible to go to the advanced classes if I wanted. I was glad that he had noticed my improvement, but I have to think about the timing of changing my current schedule. I really like my current schedule, which is the 5-6pm class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That leaves the weekends free, and I’m able to be back in time for the kids’ bedtime routine. The advanced classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8:30pm. From what I understand, the workout is more demanding than what I’m currently doing, although still not at the elite competition level. The one for the competition team is later in the evening. I’m thinking I might initially replace my 5pm Friday class with the 7pm Thursday class, and see how that goes. I just need to decide when would be the best time to make the switch.
