Tonight, I worked with two blue belts during drilling. I was able to pick up a few details on some moves that I should be able to add to my arsenal. It was also good to watch them as they worked with each other. We ran short on time toward the end of class, so the coach had us spar about ten minutes with the same partner. My partner was the toughest blue belt in the class. I felt like I performed much better against him this time than the last time I sparred with him. He did submit me with an omoplata, but that was partially because I’m still trying to work out the kinks with the basic Wilson pass. He also caught me with an Ezekiel from mount. Actually, he didn’t really have the choke. It was more of a smothering thing. I probably could have held out longer and kept working for an escape, but I felt like it would be better to just reset and work on other things. Even though he submitted me those two times, I was able to escape his side control at least once, get him into my closed guard, and even pass his guard once. I almost took his back as well before the time ran out. Each week, I feel like I’m getting closer to the blue belts in terms of skill. Hopefully, in the near future, I will have improved enough to not only be able to survive against a good blue belt, but to actually submit a blue belt.
