Rather than doing full out sparring tonight, the coach announced that we would be doing worst positions drills for the next few classes. Basically, the top guy tries to hold the bottom guy down for one minute, while the bottom guy tries to escape from, or sweep, the top guy. No submission attempts were allowed during the drill. Tonight’s bad position was smash down half guard. It actually came as a relief to me, since I was dreading the thought of doing full on sparring tonight. That’s because, last night, I was awake most of the night with a mild fever and chills. Amy had the same thing, apparently, as did Thomas. I’m feeling better now, but definitely ready for bed. Anyway, the escape drills were not quite as tiring as full on sparring. Moreover, it gave us all an opportunity to work on keeping our base from top, or trying to defend and escape from bottom.
