Miami-BJJ-Open-01

By Devon Delbrugge – This past weekend the Crazy 88 BJJ hit squad went down to Miami to start off the Jiu Jitsu season with a warm up tournament before the grand slam begins. The Lloyd Irvin team sent out a lot of killers to Miami and we had a lot of great results. There were some good match ups to show what to expect in this up coming year. Lets start out with the purple belt results. At the lightest weight class, we had David Z. to fight a home-town guy from the Avengers. Dave finished the match with a triangle and ends up winning gold in the division.

Next up, Tye Ryan goes through the first couple of opponents to reach the finals of the middleweight division against a tough kid. Tye ended up taking silver in the division after a tough match in the finals. In the medium-heavy division we had Brad Pearson and Malcolm Vaughan. They both had great matches in the division, ending with Brad taking silver and Malcolm taking bronze. Last of the purple belt weight class divisions was Timmy Spriggs in the heavy division. Even though Spriggs is off in New York for college at the time, he still some how manages to come back better and better. Timmy goes through the division and takes gold after beating 3 tough guys.

Now onto the blue belt divisions. Starting at light weight, I had a total of 4 fights. After a hard match with an Ecuadorian Judo Olympian and very close judges decision, I had a 50/50 battle which I ended up losing by a sweep placing me at bronze in the division. Moving up to the middle weight division, fellow teammate from Third Law, Joey Ruggiero, was on his A-Game this tournament.  Beating a world medalist in the run to the finals, he finishes at silver.

Jumping up to the big man division at Ultra Heavy, Crazy 88 BJJ had Al “Big Sal” Washington. Al had some crazy matches in the division let alone the tournament as he ends up almost injuring a guy by jumping guard. Al finishes at bronze with a tough loss in the semi- final round. In the women division, Cathy Tran-Zwanetz gives the team another exciting tournament, taking first in her weight class and bronze in the open division! In the Juvenile blue belt division, Gerardo Trevino was competing at his first IBJJF Tournament. Trevino goes through matches with some big name guys in the juvenile division and takes silver in his weight class and gold in the open.

Timmy Spriggs and Gerardo Trevino both won Gold Medals for Crazy 88.

Last, the white belt division. At the feather weight division, the team had Chris Kim coming out for his second tournament. Even though his opponents didn’t know of him, they all seemed to think he was a judo guy from his stance and all quickly pull guard on Chris. Chris did great and finished with a silver medal. Moving up leve, we have Matthew Burr who grinded out his opponents and fights hard to earn his bronze metal. At middle heavy, Will Smallwood has a crazy match as his opponent and himself are trading off wild positions as he ends up taking bronze. Moving on to the women division, Katie Oliphant fights cyborgs wife and gets a pretty tough match out of her. Katy comes out of the tournament with the bronze medal and a good learning experience.

Even though everybody did not place or end up with the best results, they all got a good feel for the upcoming tournament season and a good experience with some of the new faces of the division.

Matt Burr took Bronze in the White Belt Lightweight division.
