Crazy 88 BJJ sent a small team to the Phoenix Jiu Jitsu Open in Arizona this past weekend. Keith Cebula, Monica Barlow, and Lakita Patterson met up with Roberto Torralbas and a few of his students from Third Law BJJ.

Phoenix Jiu Jitsu Open was a small competition – only 4 mats!

Keith “Trainspotting” Cebula was up first early in the morning. He started the day off well with a quick submission via armbar from side mount. In his second fight, he passed his opponents guard and finished him with a wristlock. In the finals, Keith fought Josh Rodrigues from Nova União. It started out at a fast pace and ended when Keith finished him with a wristlock from an Oma Plata.

After winning his weight class, Keith entered into the Open weight division. In his first fight, he mounted an 8 point comeback against an Ultra Heavyweight winning 8-5. He won his next fight 5-0 against another Ultra Heavyweight. He lost in the finals taking Silver. Not a bad day for the featherweight.

Trainspotting has great momentum heading into the World Championships!

Unfortunately, there was no one in Lakita Patterson’s weight class, so she weighed in and advanced to the Open weight class. In the Open, she faced Cherine Fons from Alliance. It was a very tough fight and went the distance. In the end, Lakita lost a close fight 0-2. Overall, Lakita fought very well and knows what she needs to focus on before Worlds.

Next up was Monica Barlow. In her first fight, she pulled and finished her opponent with a quick triangle. In the finals, Monica faced Katrina Teer from Nova União. Monica was in control of the fight from the very beginning but some controversial calls from the ref kept the score close. In the end Monica beat her opponent 4-2.

Team Lloyd Irvin ended up doing very well. Third Law BJJ team ended up getting four medals as well with Roberto Torralbas winning Gold in Brown Belt Medium Heavy and taking Silver in the Brown Belt Open. Katy Torralbas also showed her improvement, winning Gold in Blue Belt Light and nabbing Silver in the Female Blue Belt Open. Next up is Dallas and the Brazilian Nationals!

Katy Torralbas won Gold in her weight and Silver in the Female Blue Belt Open!
