August has been a busy month for Team Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Last weekend was our third tournament this month. For my self it was the second tournament in back to back weekends. Joining me for the Boston UFC Fan Expo hosted by Grapplers Quest was my little brother Devon (16) and two members of our kids travel team Kylie (6) and Nikoma (9). This was my first time ever going to a UFC fan expo so I didn’t really know what to expect. We arrived at the venue early Saturday morning. Early enough where there wasnt any type of crowds or lines. After we weighed in (everyone easily made weight) we headed off to Starbucks. About an hour later when we came back to the venue it was like a circus. There were people everywhere, most of them had no idea what a “grapplers quest” even was. They were there to see UFC fighters! And rightfully so it was a “fan expo”.

So the children were the first up. Due to the lack of competitors in the children’s divisions Kylie and Nikoma had to bump up two weight classes. After having to go against some kids that were almost as big as me Kylie and Nikoma came out with some hardware to bring home! Nikoma ended up taking silver in No Gi losing to a much bigger opponent in the finals. In the Gi division he came back and outpointed the very same grappler that had beaten him in the finals with a take down, guard pass and mount. Kylie cruised past her No Gi competition and took gold. In her Gi division she had some battles! both kids were solid color belts (yellow and orange) meaning they have been training probably twice as long as Kylie, who is an orange belt with a white stripe. In her first match she shut her opponent down and took the match 4-0. In the Finals, she got caught in a tricky half guard spot on bottom where her opponent was able to free his leg receive points for a pass (3) and mount as well (4). Kylie came away with a silver in the gi but remains super tough for anyone she goes against.

Next up was Devon. Debuting in the advanced teens division I could tell he was very nervous, his no gi division was up first. We came up with a specific game plan for Devon, so I was excited to see how it was going to work out. First match of No Gi he sat to his guard, swept, and finished with a brabo choke. His second match went much of the same way. Pull, sweep, pass but instead of finishing he settled for 5-0. In the finals he faced a tough grappler form Gracie Barra. Devon pulled and swept right away after playing from top for a few minutes trying to pass, his opponent was able to catch him in the diamond position and finish with an arm lock. Devon had little time to dwell on his loss. His Gi division was starting right away. Devon pulled guard on his first opponent and swept to a back take. The rest of the match Devon was in mount and back mount looking for the finish but the opponent was tough. Devon came out on top 15-0. In the Finals he faced another good grappler from Gracie Barra. Devon was up 4-0 until being caught by yet another arm lock. Devon was still not done, we signed him up for the adult division as well. This meant that we would be most likely fighting at the same time. Devon ended up going 1-1 in the mens adult white belt division winning on point his first match (5-0) and losing via Kimura in the second. A great experience for Devon!

By this time the event was flooded with people. There were also a lot of celebrities on hand. Randy moss was watching a few of the matches going and to my supprise Thaigo Alves was hanging out next to the mat that I was fighting on. I had 3 matches in the mens adult purple belt division. I finished my first opponent with an Ezekiel choke from mount. My second opponent dropped out of the match literally right before it started because of a back injury. My third opponent was a tough wrestler from the Massacushets area. I was able to sweep and get the bow and arrow with in the first couple of minutes. In the finals I swept twice to win 4-0. Having Master Lloyd in my corner definitely gave me a mental advantage over my opponent’s. Master Lloyd is without a doubt one of the most influential people in the martial arts community.

After my last match I was able to watch some of my Camp Springs teammates tear it up. I got to watch my teammate Jimmy Harbison win the mens brown belt absolute division and BIG Willie Leonard closed out the men’s purple belt absolute with our other teammate Andris Brunovskis! What a day! After some celebratory team pictures, I ventured off into the land of the “fans”. I went upstairs to where the main expo was happening, all of the big name fighters were still kind of lingering around even tho the event was about to shit down due to UFC 118 about to start. As much as I like to separate my self from the average UFC fan, I must say it was cool being up there. I got about two hundred dollars worth of free supplements and free MMA gloves! Later on that evening we found a nice sports bar that was virtually empty to watch the fights at. Anyone who knows about trying to watch a big pay per view fight in a sports bar that isn’t crowded is almost impossible. So this might have been one of the highlights of the trip! What a way to end the month of August. Stay tuned because October is going to be TWICE as busy!
