We’re the #1 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team in Chicago

We won the Overall Team Title in Chicago!

On August 22, 2010, Team Lloyd Irvin sent a competition squad to Chicago for the IBJJF Chicago International Open. This would be the first tournament of the 2010-2011 competition season. As a team, we won the Overall Team Title – an incredible accomplishment because our team was not local (this might be the first time that an Open has been won by a non-local team). Furthermore, the title was won with less than half of the members of the Brazilian JiuJitsu competition team! Because of the depth of our roster, we have been splitting up the tournaments between the different schools and have continued to win team titles!

Tye Ryan gameplans with Timmy Spriggs

The stars of the Blue Belt division were Tye Ryan Murphy and Timothy Spriggs.  Tye Ryan started off slow, falling back 4 points in his first match and having to pull out the last-minute triangle to get the tapout vs. a game grappler from Jack McVicker’s school.  He breezed through the middle matches to reach the Championship.  In the finals, Tye defeated Mongolian BJJ’s Bold Erdene who was the 2010 World Bronze Medalist.  Timmy Spriggs submitted his way through his division and the Open – not bad for a kid who only trains 4 months out of the year.  Also, Third Law BJJ’s Kimberly “Lady” Rivers won the Female Open.

Also, we had our killer Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt squad clean house – Third Law’s Roberto Torralbas taking Middle, Crazy 88 BJJ’s Brad Pearson and Jon Delbrugge taking Medium Heavy, and Crazy 88 BJJ’s Evan Gideon taking Heavy (defeating this year’s Pan Am Silver Medalist 13-0 along the way).  We also took the Open in this belt level.

Purple Belt Medium Heavy is hard division to crack!

Of special note is the great job done by our new White Belt squad of Tom Shrum, Matt Rihani, Monica Barlow, and Brian Clifton – 100% medal rate (2 Golds and 2 Silvers)!
